The telc Deutsch A1 exam (also known as Start Deutsch 1) certifies basic German communication skills. It tests your ability to understand simple, everyday expressions, introduce yourself, ask and answer basic personal questions, and write short messages. This certificate is globally recognized for German family reunion visas (Ehegattennachzug).

What to expect

Exam Structure

The exam comprises a Written Exam (Listening, Reading, Writing) taken in a group, followed by a brief Group Oral Exam.

Writing (Schreiben) 2 Parts 20 Min 15 Marks Filling out a standard personal form and writing a simple short message/email.
Speaking (Sprechen) 3 Parts Approx. 15 Min 15 Marks Group format (up to 4): Introducing yourself, requesting/providing info, making simple requests.

Note: The telc A1 Exam can only be taken as a complete Exam. Partial Modules are not possible. When you fail any module, you still need to repeat the complete Exam.

You need to score at least 36 out of 60 overall points (60%).

You take the oral test with up to 3 other candidates. You will introduce yourself, ask questions using visual cue cards, and respond to requests from other candidates.

No, partial retakes are generally not available at level A1; the full exam must be taken together.
